“Монографическое исследование В. Н. Рябцевича посвящено двум мало изученным начинаниям в истории денежного хозяйства России последней четверти XVII – первого десятилетия XVIII вв. Речь идет о своеобразных памятниках денежного обращения, определяемых современной нумизматикой как “монетами чрезвычайных обстоятельств”.

В 1686-1687 гг. в городе Севске (ныне районный центр Брянской области) чеканились “чехи”— билоновые монеты, предназначенные для рынка Левобережной Украины, вошедшей незадолго перед этим (1654) в состав Российского государства. Этими монетами было выплачено жалование стрельцам и казакам, отправленным весной 1687 г. в поход на Крымское ханство. Московские власти пытались распространить “чехи” и на территории Речи Посполитой (в Беларуси, Литве и на Правобережной Украине).

В 1707-1709 гг. Москва выпустила “шестаки” и “тинфы”, производство которых, как в случае с “чехами”, имело изначально целенаправленный характер: оно должно было обеспечить платежеспособность армии Петра I, сражавшейся с войсками шведского короля Карла XII, вторгшимися в ходе Северной войны (1700-1721) в Литву, Беларусь и на Украину, в Польшу, Саксонию и Пруссию…

Четкие представления об истоках и ходе претворения в жизнь этих эмиссий были утрачены уже в XVIII в. Нумизматы ХIХ-ХХ вв. сломали немало копий, штурмуя многочисленные загадки, порожденные “чехами”, “шестаками” и “тинфами”. Однако и поныне эти монеты представляют один из наименее изученных разделов истории денежного обращения.

В основе труда В. Н. Рябцевича лежит составленный и исчерпывающе прокомментированный им сводный каталог собранного материала. В этом каталоге зафиксированы российско-”польские” монеты из музейных и частных коллекций России, Украины, Литвы, Польши, Германии и США. В. Н. Рябцевич вводит в научный оборот не только ряд забытых, хотя и изданных в прошлом веке документов, но и публикует многие неизвестные ранее архивные материалы.
